Two cousins extradited for Cypriot car crash

Two cousins from Essex who were involved in a car accident which killed a teenager in Cyprus have been transferred to a Cypriot prison following their extradition.

Luke Atkinson and Michael Binnington from Witham were escorted to Heathrow Airport and flown to Cyprus where they will begin prison sentences for manslaughter.

Last week, the two lost their High Court bid to avoid extradition to the island.

The men were in a car driven by Julian Harrington when it hit a moped, killing pillion passenger Christos Paliris, 17.

The cousin’s lawyer, Karen Todner, said they faced a minimum jail term of six months in Nicosia before they could be brought back.

She hopes their safety is looked after because there was a lot of widespread local anger regarding the case.

The men attended Belgravia police station in central London where they shared a tearful farewell with family members prior to being taken to Heathrow Airport where they were handed over to Cypriot authorities.

Ms Todner went on to say she was surprised by the decision of the Supreme Court in this country not to get involved with the case, and the only thing they could do is get them repatriated back to the UK as soon as possible.

She believes the family would try to go there to visit and has arranged for the British High Commission to visit them today.

Harrington, also from Witham, is serving a 15-year prison sentence after admitting to manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm in the accident in Protaras in 2006.

The two were initially acquitted by a Cypriot court in February 2007; however the verdict was overturned by a higher court in 2008 after they had already returned to the UK.

They were then both sentenced in their absence by the Supreme Court of Cyprus to serve three years’ jail time teach.

In June, they lost their UK court fight against extradition and recently the UK Supreme Court had turned down their applications for another appeal.
